IT'S OK TO NOT BE OK

Today I am giving myself the permission to not be OK. With so much talk and information about mental health, sometimes it can feel like if we're not exercising positive affirmations and embracing our emotions in a healthy way, then we don't deserve to be happy. Today I have decided to chuck all of that out of the window and embrace the lazy, crazy, chocolate-loving, self-wallowing version of myself, in a bid to just give myself a break. Because the truth is, being OK actually takes so much effort. Now, don't get me wrong, it's absolutely 100% worth it: so much so, that I have dedicated my personal and professional life to connecting with the things we need to live our lives more fully. I spend each and every day walking alongside people while they figure out what they want and need. Being OK is GREAT, and fills you full of all the warm, fuzzy feelings that we all love to experience, but, just for today, I can't be bothered. Today I need to be tired, sit around getting over-emotional at Instagram videos and slowly make my way through a big bag of giant chocolate buttons. Who knows why? Maybe it's being over-stimulated over the weekend; maybe it's hormones, or maybe it's the Mercury/Pluto/Moon or Sun in retrograde...the simple fact is that if I want to be OK tomorrow I definitely need to be not OK today. Being not OK from time to time; allowing ourselves the freedom to actually do what our body and soul are really craving is just as much self-love as all the other positive steps that we take to keep ourselves connected and aligned with the life that we truly want and deserve. So, if today is one of those days for you, welcome it in and make space...it's OK!

END OF SUMMER - THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-CARE

In today's fast-paced and demanding world, the concept of self-care has gained significant traction. It's not just a fleeting trend or a luxury any more, but a vital aspect of maintaining a healthy and balanced life. Self-care is the practice of intentionally taking care of one's physical, emotional, and mental well-being, and it plays a crucial role in improving our overall health and happiness. Now that the summer is coming to a close, the time has come to start taking real care of ourselves again! These crazy temperatures have made almost everything impossible. However, with the arrival of autumn, we have the chance to slow things down again and decide what our next steps will be. SWITCH OFF In a world filled with constant stimuli and information overload, not to mention endless parties and summer fun, our minds can become overwhelmed and fatigued. Giving ourselves a break and disconnecting from digital devices or choosing activities that bring joy and relaxation can lead to increased focus, productivity and mental clarity. Meditation, journalling or simply spending some time outside can also help to calm the mind and reduce stress. EMOTIONS Another fundamental part of self-care is acknowledging and addressing our emotions, as bottling things up can lead to increased anxiety and depression. Talking through the way that you are feeling with a friend or learning emotional release techniques with a therapist are just two ways that can help us process and manage our emotions more effectively. When we discover how to regulate our feelings it becomes easier to navigate and create healthier connections with those around us: developing our own emotional intelligence provides us with the tools to treat others with empathy and understanding. Self-care is not just an individual practice; it impacts the way we interact with others. When we prioritise our well-being, we become better partners, parents, friends, and colleagues. By taking care of ourselves, we can offer more genuine support and compassion to those around us, building stronger and healthier relationships.

PERFECTLY IMPERFECT

Gather around, my fellow travellers on this winding road we call life. Today, I invite you to join me in a moment of reflection; a pause amidst the hustle and bustle to explore the delicate dance between self-improvement and self-acceptance. In a world that constantly bombards us with messages of perfection, it's easy to fall into the trap of striving for an idealised version of ourselves. We set lofty goals, chart ambitious plans, convinced that happiness lies just beyond the next milestone. And yet, despite our best efforts, we find ourselves caught in an endless cycle of chasing after a mirage. What if I told you that the key to true growth lies not in the relentless pursuit of being perfect, but in the gentle embrace of our imperfections? What if, instead of viewing our flaws as stumbling blocks on the path to success, we saw them as stepping stones to self-discovery? It's a radical notion, I know. We're led to believe that success is equal to flawlessness, and so embracing our imperfections can feel like swimming against the tide. And yet, it is in our moments of vulnerability that we find our greatest strengths. If you've read some of my previous articles, you might have started to notice a pattern. Life, as I've come to realise, is not a linear journey. It's more like a series of unexpected twists and turns, sometimes leading to places we never imagined we could go. My own path took a sharp detour about six years back, and let me tell you, it was a wild ride. Before that unforeseen turn, my life seemed to be following a script of success and ambition. Family, career, aspirations – everything neatly lined up. Or, so I thought. Then, illness struck like a bolt from the blue. The life I knew came crashing down around me. My body rebelled, refusing to keep pace with the frantic rhythm I'd set for myself. Breathing became a struggle, mobility a distant memory. The world I inhabited shrank to the confines of doctor's offices and 'mini-breaks' in hospital more often than I care to remember. But, within that chaos, there was a strange sort of clarity. A moment of stillness amid the storm, where I finally had the chance to truly see myself – not the strong façade I presented to the world, but the person beneath the layers of expectation and obligation. In that moment of reckoning, I made a choice. A choice to redefine success on my own terms. To embrace the messy, imperfect beauty of simply being human. It wasn't an easy road; far from it. There were setbacks and stumbles; moments of doubt and despair. But, with each faltering step, I found myself drawing closer to a deeper understanding of what it means to be whole. After a crazy few years, I now see a different person in the mirror. The shininess of my former life has been shed like old skin, replaced by a newfound sense of purpose and presence. Connections forged in the crucible of adversity, self-love cultivated through acts of radical acceptance, personal values that serve as my north star in a world set adrift. Do I have it all figured out? Far from it. There are still days when I lose my way, when the weight of expectation threatens to overwhelm. But, in those moments, I remind myself of one simple truth – perfection is an illusion. We are already perfect in our imperfection, flawed and fallible, yet infinitely worthy of love and acceptance. So, here's to embracing the messiness of life; to celebrating our scars as symbols of resilience rather than marks of failure. Here's to striving not for perfection, but for authenticity. In the end, it's not about reaching some arbitrary standard of what and how we should be, but about embracing the full spectrum of our humanity – shadows and all. Today’s offering is to encourage you all to raise a glass to the beautifully imperfect journey that is life, and raise a toast to the courage it takes to walk it with open hearts and open minds. Cheers to us, imperfectly perfect in every way!

THE NEW YEAR - EMBRACING NEW BEGINNINGS

As the calendar turns to a new year, it brings with it a sense of renewal and the promise of a fresh start. For many, this transitional period is synonymous with setting new objectives and resolutions. Whether it's improving health, advancing in a career, or fostering personal relationships, the new year provides a symbolic blank canvas on which we can paint our aspirations and dreams. Before diving into new objectives, it's essential to take a moment for reflection. What lessons did the past year teach us? What accomplishments are we proud of, and what challenges did we overcome? Reflecting on the past helps us gain insights into our strengths, weaknesses, and areas where we want to grow. This introspective process sets the stage for the intentional creation of objectives that are not just arbitrary, but meaningful and aligned with our values. SWETTING S.M.A.RT OBJECTIVES Setting objectives is an art that benefits from precision and clarity. The S.M.A.R.T. criteria - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound - serve as a practical guide. Instead of vague aspirations like 'exercise more' or 'save money', transform them into specific and actionable goals such as 'exercise for 30 minutes five times a week', or 'save 100 euros per month'. This level of specificity turns intentions into tangible targets, making the path forward more discernible. CREATING A ROAD MAP Once objectives are established, the next step is to create a road map. Break down larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks. A step-by-step plan not only makes the journey less daunting but also allows for a sense of accomplishment as each milestone is achieved. Consider using tools like planners or digital apps to keep track of progress and stay organised. A well-defined road map serves as a compass, guiding us through the twists and turns of the year. BUILDING ACCOUNTABILITY Sharing objectives with friends, family, or a coach can significantly increase accountability. When others are aware of our goals, there's an added layer of responsibility to stay committed. Consider finding an accountability partner or joining a community with similar objectives. This shared journey not only provides motivation but also fosters a sense of camaraderie, reminding us that we are not alone in our pursuit of growth. EMBRACING ADAPTABILITY While setting objectives is crucial, it's equally important to embrace adaptability. Life is dynamic, and circumstances may change. Be open to adjusting goals as needed, without viewing modifications as failures. A flexible mindset encourages resilience and ensures that we remain focused on the essence of our objectives rather than rigidly adhering to initial plans. CULTIVATING A GROWTH MINDSET The pursuit of new objectives is an opportunity for personal and professional growth. Embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and evolve. Cultivating a growth mindset involves viewing setbacks not as failures, but as stepping stones toward success. Each obstacle is a chance to refine our approach, strengthen our resilience, and ultimately move closer to our objectives. CELEBRATING ACHIEVEMENTS As the journey unfolds, take time to celebrate achievements, no matter how small. Acknowledge the progress made, and be proud of the efforts invested. Celebrating achievements provides positive reinforcement, fuelling the motivation needed to persist in the pursuit of larger objectives. It's a reminder that each step forward is a victory worth acknowledging. In conclusion, the new year serves as a powerful catalyst for personal growth and transformation. As we embark on this new chapter, let us embrace the opportunity to shape our destiny and make the most of the fresh beginnings a new year brings.

THE POWER OF CONNECTION

In an era defined by technological advancements and virtual interactions, the significance of genuine human connection cannot be overstated. As we navigate through the fast-paced, interconnected world, it becomes increasingly evident that the essence of a fulfilling life lies in the quality and depth of our connections with others. Beyond the surface level of social media and digital communication, there exists a profound need for authentic human bonds that contribute to our well-being, emotional resilience and overall happiness. At the heart of our human experience is the innate desire for connection. From the moment we're born, we crave the warmth of human touch, the soothing cadence of familiar voices, and the reassuring gaze of those who care for us. This need for connection extends far beyond infancy and shapes our lives in profound ways. Numerous studies have shown that strong social connections are linked to better mental health, increased longevity, and a reduced risk of chronic diseases. Connection provides a sense of belonging and purpose, which are essential elements for a fulfilling life. When we feel connected to others, whether it be through family, friends or community, we experience a profound sense of validation and support. These connections create a safety net that allows us to navigate life's challenges with greater resilience and courage. The emotional support derived from our connections serves as a buffer against stress, anxiety, and feelings of isolation. Moreover, the impact of connection on our mental well-being is profound. Meaningful relationships contribute to a sense of identity and self-worth, fostering an environment where individuals can express their thoughts, emotions, and vulnerabilities without fear of judgment. This emotional openness not only enhances personal growth but also strengthens the bonds between individuals. In a world where the prevalence of challenges to mental health is on the rise, the role of connection as a protective factor cannot be overstated. Beyond the individual level, social connections play a pivotal role in fostering empathy, cooperation, and collective well-being. As we engage with diverse communities, we gain a broader perspective on life, fostering a sense of understanding and interconnectedness. This shared humanity becomes the foundation for a more compassionate and inclusive society, where individuals are empowered to support one another in times of need. The advent of technology has undoubtedly transformed the way we connect, opening up new avenues for communication and collaboration. However, it is essential to distinguish between digital connections and genuine, face-to-face interactions. While technology facilitates instant communication, it often lacks the depth and emotional resonance of in-person connections. Balancing the benefits of virtual connectivity with the irreplaceable value of physical presence is crucial in cultivating a holistic approach to connection in the modern world. From the cradle to our golden years, the quality of our relationships shapes the narrative of our existence. As we navigate the complexities of the modern world, prioritising and nurturing meaningful connections should be at the forefront of our endeavours. In fostering genuine connections, we unlock the transformative power of human relationships, creating a tapestry of shared experiences that enrich our lives and contribute to the flourishing of our human spirit.

WHY COMMUNITY AND CONNECTION MATTER

Today, I want to talk to you about something that’s incredibly close to my heart -community and connection. As a social coach, I see so many people striving to live their best lives, and one of the most powerful elements in that journey is the sense of belonging we find not just within ourselves, but also with others. There are three words that define the work I do: self-love, personal values and connection. I want to share with you why, for me, connections matter so deeply and how they can transform our lives. THE ESSENSE OF CONNECTION It's more than just exchanging pleasantries or sharing a laugh; it’s about being seen and understood for who we truly are. There’s a profound comfort in those moments when someone really 'gets' you. They see beyond your achievements and your roles in life, right into your very soul. These are the moments that ground us and remind us of our humanity. THE ROLE OF COMMUNITY Community is where connection thrives. It's where we find our tribe, the people who resonate with our values and dreams. In these spaces, we share our triumphs and our challenges, and we find strength in our collective experiences. Whether it’s a group of friends, a support network, or even a book club, these communities offer us a tapestry of shared life that is rich and fulfilling. WE NEED EACH OTHER Have you ever tried to carry something really heavy by yourself? It’s exhausting, right? Now, think about how much easier it is when someone helps you. That’s what community does for us. Life’s burdens become lighter, and we find we can handle more than we ever thought possible with a little help from our friends. The empathy, support and wisdom that come from these connections are important pillars we can lean on. THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT It’s not just a feeling; there’s real science behind the power of connection. Studies have shown that strong social bonds can improve our mental and physical health. People with solid social networks tend to live longer, experience less stress, and are less prone to chronic illnesses. Even simple acts like sharing a smile or a hug release oxytocin, the 'love hormone', which boosts our mood and well-being. NAVIGATING CONNECTION IN A DIGITAL WORLD We live in a digital age where genuine connections can sometimes feel out of reach. But it’s possible to build meaningful relationships even in this landscape. Here are a few things I’ve found helpful: 1. Be Present Whether you’re chatting online or meeting in person, be fully present. Listen with intention, respond with empathy and show that you care. 2. Share Authentically Don’t just post your highlight reel. Share your real stories - your struggles, dreams and vulnerabilities. Authenticity fosters deeper connections, as you are showing the real you. 3. Make Time for Others Check in with the people you care about. A simple message or call can mean the world to someone and strengthens your bonds. 4. Join Groups Seek out communities that share your interests and values. Engage actively and contribute your unique perspective. EMBRACING VULNERABILITY One of the most beautiful aspects of connection is the space it provides for vulnerability. When we let our guard down and show our true selves, we invite others to do the same. It’s in these moments of shared vulnerability that real, meaningful connections are born. At the core of a fulfilling life lies our ability to connect with others. It’s in the shared laughter, the comfort of a loved one’s embrace, and the collective strength found in a supportive community. This is what makes life rich and meaningful. So, embrace the connections in your life. Nurture your communities, and watch as your world blossoms in ways you never imagined. Life isn’t meant to be a solitary journey; it’s a vibrant, interconnected dance where every step is enriched by those who dance beside us. Reach out, connect, and let the power of community light your path.

TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE

LIFE ISN'T SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS TO YOU When we’re in the midst of our day-to-day, it can be easy to forget that life is a canvas, and we are the artists that decide what to create. It's not just a series of random events that unfold without rhyme or reason, but rather a masterpiece that we have the power to shape and mould. This empowering perspective reminds us that we don’t have to be passive observers of our own lives; we are active participants in the grand tapestry of existence. Life isn't something that happens to you. It's something you create. The concept of life as a creation rather than a mere happening can be a game-changer in how we approach our daily existence. It encourages us to take responsibility for our choices and actions, recognising that we have the power to shape our destiny. PURPOSE AND DIRECTION When you view life as something you create, it becomes essential to define your purpose and direction. You're no longer drifting aimlessly; instead, you are setting sail towards a specific destination. This clarity of purpose can provide a sense of fulfilment and motivation that may have previously eluded you. CHOICES AND ACCOUNTABILITY Every choice you make, from the smallest to the most significant, contributes to the canvas of your life. Understanding this, you become more accountable for your decisions. You recognise that your actions have consequences and that you are the author of your own story. This awareness can lead to more thoughtful choices and a greater sense of control. RESILIENCE AND ADAPTABILITY Life is filled with unexpected twists and turns. When you see life as something you create, you become more resilient and adaptable in the face of challenges. Instead of seeing setbacks as insurmountable obstacles, you view them as opportunities to adjust your course and create a new path forward. EMPOWERMENT AND SELF-FULFILMENT The belief that life is something you create empowers you to take control of your personal growth. You are no longer waiting for external factors to change; you actively seek opportunities for self-improvement and growth. This mindset fosters a continuous journey of self-discovery and development. RELATIONSHIPS AND CONNECTIONS Your relationships with others also play a crucial role to play in the creation of your life. You have the power to nurture positive connections and contribute to the well-being of those around you. Building meaningful relationships and fostering a sense of community can be integral to the creation of a fulfilling life. GRATITUDE AND MINDFULNESS Making this shift in your thought pattern allows you to become more appreciative of the present moment and the opportunities it offers. This heightened awareness can lead to a deeper appreciation for the beauty and wonder of every day life. LEGACY AND IMPACT When you view life as a creation, you start thinking about the legacy you want to leave behind. What mark do you want to make on the world? How do you want to be remembered? These questions guide your actions and decisions, inspiring you to contribute positively to the world around you. CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION Creativity isn't limited to the realm of art; it extends to all aspects of our lives. When you embrace the idea that life is something you create, you tap into your innate creativity and innovation. You find new and inventive ways to solve problems, achieve goal, and bring your visions to life. Life can be overwhelming at times; sometimes we can lose our way. Who hasn’t felt like they don’t know which way to turn at least once? When in doubt, remember: one choice, one action, and one moment at a time. Take control of your destiny, make purposeful choices, and live a life filled with meaning and fulfilment. Embrace your role as the artist of your own life's masterpiece, and paint it with the vibrant colours of purpose, passion, and possibility.
